SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27


10:00 am Movie – The Story of Stuff

A short 20-minute film delves into the story of where our stuff comes from.  Hosted by Alleghany College in Pennsylvania and produced by Free Range Studios, Annie Leonard takes you on an eye-opening tour of the costs of consumption.  An easy-to-understand, quick film that’s an educational must-see.  


10:30 am Rain Barrel Workshop

Pre-registered guests partake in making their own rain barrel with instruction by Bill Frank.  Each 55-gallon barrel has the potential to save you more than 1,000 gallons of water in summer months.  Registration deadline is February 20 and the cost per barrel is $60 – a huge savings on regular-priced barrels.  


11:30 am Move – The Meatrix

A spoof on The Matrix movies, this animated film educates about factory-farming using super-hero farm animals to comically tell the story of food people are eating.  Produced by Free Range Studios, 4 minutes.


Noon Trash Bash Commences

Pre-registered foursomes return from trash collection and start construction on their trash masterpieces which will be judged and auctioned off.  Trash Bash registration is available through February 20 and is FREE!

  

12:15 p.m. DIY Tumbling Composter

A tried and true method of composting, tumbling composters create rich black compost gold in a short 4 to 6 weeks.  If you’re feeling up to some manual labor to save a few bucks, make your own!  Watch and learn as Tom Chabi demos the ins and outs of tumbling composter construction.  Manuals with step-by-step will be available for sale after the demonstration for $20.


1:00 p.m. Movie – The Mouth Revolution

A super brief, 5 minute parody about taking a stand against fats, artificial ingredients, GMOs, and pesticides. Produced by Free Range Studios.


1:15 p.m. Cooking Demonstration – Sabrosa Foods

Known for yummy salsas, Sabrosa will be presenting cooking how-to showcasing their locally produced salsas.  No need to register, just show up, watch, and learn.


2:00 p.m. Solar Heating & Power

Stop by to check out Solar Services while they demonstrate how to construct an at-home solar window heating unit.  And, you’ll be able to learn about how solar panels work by checking out an actual panel.


2:30 p.m. Trash Bash Judging

With contestants finishing up their artful trash masterpieces, now it’s your turn to judge them!  Input from visitors will help determine the winners.


3:00 p.m. Canning Basics

3:30 p.m. Recycling in Hampton Roads

TFC Recycling speaks candidly about the importance of recycling and their part in the system.  This worth-while presentation will allow residents to understand the process from blue carts on the curb to recycled products on the shelves.


4:00 p.m. Square Foot Gardening

Short on space, but want an amazing garden?  Square foot gardening is an amazing technique that will allow a family of four to eat on a small 4’ by 8’ space.  We’re so excited to share this practice with you we’ll be offering a workshop both Saturday and Sunday!


4:30 p.m. Movie – The Botany of Desire – Apples

An interesting, educational PBS production about the evolution of four very different plants that have aroused our senses.  Check out the apple segment of the film that tells the story of the history of apples, Johnny Appleseed, and more.  30 minutes


5:00 p.m. Music Feature by the Multicultural Steel Orchestra

Comprised of youth from Hampton Roads’ cities, the group will perform a fun and enjoyable set to end day 1 of the Sustainable Living Fair.

Take advantage of plucking prime in-season produce and preserving it for all seasons.  Duane from Sabrosa Foods got his start canning and is the perfect man to explain how it all works.

You’ve experienced and loved the fare served up at Get Fresh Café inside Five Points Community Farm Market.  Now, you’ll go behind the scenes on how guest chef Nancy Cobb cooks up a seasonal dish.
